Ludic biographies: play as a way into subjectivity
Ongoing · University of Deusto, since 2023 · 43°15′N 2°56′W Bilbao · es/en
I’m working on my PhD dissertation about how playing — and giving up play —
takes part in shaping who we are: a qualitative study, done with young
Uruguayans, that doesn’t take for granted that play is innocent, but sees
it as shaped by gender, the market, and the digital, and holds onto that
critical lens throughout.
That research also produces a digital annex: the material that doesn’t fit
in a book. Interactive visualizations of participants’ play trajectories,
their digitized fanzines, audio excerpts from the interviews, and the
phrase-cards each person wrote about their own play.
The theoretical and methodological grounding for the proposal is in the
chapter written together with María Jesús Monteagudo:
Pérez Pollero, M. y Monteagudo, M. J. (2025). «La biografía lúdica. Una propuesta teórico-metodológica para el estudio del jugar y de la subjetividad», en Cartografía lúdica: un mapa vivo por explorar. Dykinson, pp. 247–265.
Ongoing · Colegio San Juan Bautista, since October 2025 · 34°54′38.761″S 56°09′18.065″W · coordinating the prototyping team · es/en
I coordinate the multidisciplinary team that prototypes upper secondary education (EMS) at Colegio San Juan Bautista, as part of Eutopía 2035.
The goal is to prototype the school’s proposal for its upper-secondary
stage: how to shape people in the spirit of the school’s own character,
brought into dialogue with contemporary times.
Kit lúdico Colateral
Finished · Municipality of Montevideo and UCU, 2024–2026 · 34°54′23.874″S 56°11′09.590″W · game design and project management · es/en
A play-based kit for drug-use prevention with adolescents, co-designed with the Municipality of Montevideo and UCU (2024–2025): five box games with progressively difficult levels. Game design and project management.
Between 2024 and 2025 we co-designed Kit lúdico Colateral between the
Municipality of Montevideo and the Universidad Católica del Uruguay: a set
of tools for drug-use prevention with adolescents. My role on the team was
game design and project management.
We built it as five box games, with progressively difficult levels, meant
for sustained groups of adolescents aged 12 to 18: school groups or teams
who already know each other and share a common activity.
For the design we reviewed national and international prevention
programmes, looking to strengthen decision-making, resistance to peer
pressure, and reflection on one’s own environment. The Municipality of
Montevideo ran a pilot programme over the 2025–2026 summer (December to
March); the launch was covered by
Canal 10.
Workshop on play as a political device for transformation, with José Pablo Velázquez: profaning — in Giorgio Agamben's sense — what has been confined to the sacred (the economy, the law, politics) to open up new forms of communication, bond and territory.
Between 2020 and 2022, José Pablo Velázquez and I put together El juego y
lo sagrado (roughly, “Play and the Sacred”): a workshop that set out to
explore the power of play as a political device for transforming reality.
We started from the idea that the economy, the law, politics, and other
forms of communication and bonding are confined to the realm of the sacred
and become untouchable. Profaning those dimensions, from Giorgio Agamben’s
perspective, is a way of returning the sacred to the human sphere, and so
unleashing the power of transformation.
We were looking for a space where the act of profaning, through play, would
open up new forms of communication, bonds, and territories.
Duo with Daniel Pena: popular-music arrangements, original compositions, and «entre nosotros», an experience that brought music into home livings to explore play between musicians and participants.
Between 2016 and 2020, Daniel Pena and I put together a play-music duo. Our
work unfolded along two lines. On one hand, arrangements of popular music
and original compositions meant to bring out the power of wind and string
instruments. On the other, the musical experience «entre nosotros» (roughly,
“among ourselves”): a research space we built by touring house livings, to
explore different forms of interaction between the musicians and the
people taking part, between play and music.
We performed, among other venues, at the Festival de Escenas Breves at
INAE-Casa INJU, at Música por la Vida at the Fundación Zelmar Michelini, and
with Micropoesías de la vida cotidiana
at El Chamuyo. We also took part in the short films
Encerrados (Casa Bertolt
Brecht) and the spot
No a la baja by Colectivo
Catalejo.
